This is how the laboratory we use different from the one offered by your other healthcare provider. When our provider assesses for any risks of heart and vascular disease, we check for many advanced markers which are not part of a regular work up. These markers carry the important information about cardiometabolic risk-enhancing factors and are aimed to PREVENT heart problems. Here is an example.

You may know The Biggest Loser show. The show features obese or overweight contestants competing to win a cash prize by losing the highest percentage of weight relative to their initial weight. To achieve the goal, they work with trainers. One of the show's trainers is the biggest names in the fitness industry. At the age of 52 he had a heart attack at the gym in the middle of his workout. He was in great shape and his cholesterol levels were normal, but he happened to have elevated Lp(a), the protein which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Lp(a) is never a part of work up ordered by conventional providers. However, it worth checking it even on a very healthy individual.
